QUOTE BOARD "Low vitamin D status in patients with IBD is associated with increased risk of clinical relapse, disease activity, and intestinal inflammation." "Higher vitamin D levels and vitamin D supplementation have been associated with gut microbiome composition shifts toward increased diversity and enrichment of beneficial gut bacteria in healthy adults and in patients with IBD." "Vitamin D treatment associates with decreased disease activity and inflammatory markers and increased IgA-bound and decreased IgG-bound gut microbiota." "Our results demonstrate that vitamin D promotes immune tolerance to gut microbiota in patients with IBD [inflammatory bowel disease - ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease]." WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Inflammatory Bowel Disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease) are diseases of chronic inflammation which results from a dysfunctional or hyperactive immune response. As you have read in many previous newsletters, Vitamin D is an essential nutrient required by immune cells to express healthy structure and function. Without sufficient Vitamin D neither your immune cells nor your immune system can function properly. The most common dysfunction caused by deficient Vitamin D is the inability to properly regulate inflammation and the inability to mount a proper immune defense against bacteria and unhealthy or pathogenic bacteria. What this research shows is that sufficient Vitamin D is also required by the beneficial gut bacteria which also play a significant role in inflammation and immunity. Deficient Vitamin D leads to deficient beneficial gut bacteria and both lead to chronic gut inflammation which leads to inflammatory bowel disease. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO You need to supplement with a sufficient daily dose of Vitamin D and, as you have read in a multitude of previous newsletters, a sufficient daily dose of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which together are potent resolvers of hyper-inflammation and promotors of healthy gut bacteria. This is exactly why Dr. Chestnut formulated OmegA+D Sufficiency™ with sufficient daily amounts of omega-3, vitamin D, and very importantly, a synergistic amount of Vitamin A from cod liver oil (Vitamin A and D work synergistically together and upregulate the receptors of each other).
